When my partner and I closed on our first house in March 2020, we had big plans. We envisioned a housewarming party, inviting friends from across the country, and hosting casual backyard dinners with drinks, music, and lots of cheese boards. But, as we all know, life had other plans—enter the pandemic and the sudden halt to everything, including our housewarming dreams.
Despite the unexpected pause, we still felt incredibly fortunate to have a home to settle into during such uncertain times. While we’ve since turned what was once a guest room into a gym, and hosting a housewarming now feels like a distant thought (is there such a thing as a “house cooling”?), we’re looking forward to hosting again—especially in our backyard, surrounded by friends, family, and neighbors. Of course, there’s one important detail left to figure out: the tablescape.
When it came to transforming our outdoor space, we started with the essentials: a barbecue, an outdoor table, and chairs. I’m pleased to report that we’re still very happy with those purchases. Then, in true “setting the mood” fashion, we strung up some fairy lights—a personal weakness of mine. I could be in the most rundown spot, but if there are twinkling lights above me, I’m immediately charmed. And just like that, we had the foundation for outdoor entertaining.
Now, the final piece of the puzzle: the table setting. For me, creating the perfect tablescape is about more than just the aesthetics—it’s about setting the stage for memorable gatherings, filled with laughter, good food, and a laid-back atmosphere. Whether you’re hosting a small dinner party or a larger family gathering, here’s my process for setting an outdoor table that’s both beautiful and functional.
1. Start with the Essentials
The first step is always to make sure you have the basic tableware and dinnerware you need. This means plates, glasses, silverware, and napkins. Since we live in a warmer climate, I chose melamine plates and unbreakable glassware for durability. I’ve also opted for reusable cloth napkins to add a touch of elegance while keeping things environmentally friendly.
2. Layering for Texture and Depth
One of my favorite tricks for creating a visually interesting table is layering. I start with a tablecloth or placemats (depending on the vibe I’m going for), then layer on dinner plates, salad plates, and bowls. The idea is to create a sense of depth and variety, while keeping things casual enough for outdoor dining.
I tend to stick with neutral colors for the larger items—think white, beige, or muted earth tones—so I can easily swap out accent pieces when I want to change things up for different gatherings. A set of ceramic bowls for the salad or side dishes helps to break up the monotony of the flat surfaces and gives the table a more curated look.
3. Incorporating Greenery
Adding fresh flowers or greenery to your tablescape is a simple yet effective way to elevate your setup. I love the idea of using small potted plants as centerpieces or sprigs of herbs, like rosemary or lavender, for a subtle yet fragrant touch. Not only do they look beautiful, but they also serve as a conversation starter!
If fresh flowers aren’t in season or available, I’ll opt for artificial flowers that have a similar feel or use greenery from our backyard, like eucalyptus or ivy, which bring a natural vibe to the table. You can also use candles or lanterns for a warm, cozy ambiance.
4. Adding a Personal Touch
While I want the overall vibe to be cohesive and inviting, I also love adding small personal touches to make guests feel at home. This could be as simple as placing name cards on the table or including small handwritten notes with each place setting to make it feel more intimate.
Additionally, I’ve started incorporating fun, seasonal elements—whether it’s a small bowl of fresh fruit, a patterned table runner, or a unique centerpiece that reflects the time of year. For summer, I love a coastal-inspired look with seashells or bright pops of color, while in the fall, I might go for a more rustic, pumpkin-filled aesthetic.
5. The Final Touches
Once the table is set, it’s time for the finishing touches. I like to step back and see if anything needs tweaking. Do I need a few more candles? Are there any blank spots that could use a small decorative item? I often add a few colorful napkin rings or unique drink stirrers to bring in an element of fun.
At this point, I also take a moment to consider lighting. If it’s evening, the string lights come on to add that perfect glow, but I’ll also bring out a few votive candles or lanterns to add a warm and welcoming atmosphere. A well-lit table instantly makes everything feel more festive.
6. Keep It Practical
While I love all the decorative details, I also want the table to be practical for my guests. This means ensuring there’s enough space for everyone to comfortably eat, drink, and chat. I always think about the flow—making sure there’s space for serving platters, drinks, and condiments without overcrowding the table.
It’s also essential to have plenty of seating for everyone, which is why I opted for versatile chairs that can be moved around easily for different group sizes. With our cozy outdoor space, I can make the table as casual or formal as I want, and I think that’s one of the best parts of outdoor dining.
Ready for Outdoor Gatherings
With these tips, I feel ready to host an outdoor dinner or barbecue at the drop of a hat. We’ve created a beautiful space where we can enjoy long summer evenings with family and friends, and now that I have the perfect tablescape in place, it’s just a matter of filling it with delicious food and great company. I can’t wait for the days when we can gather outside again, enjoying the warm breeze, sharing stories, and savoring every moment.
